CITY ERASED: Mapping Seattle’s Highway Cut

CITY ERASED explores the legacy of urban revision and displacement caused by the construction of Interstate 5 in Seattle — a project that reshaped neighborhoods, divided communities, and radically altered the city in the name of progress.
Using archival research, mapping, and digital reconstruction, the exhibition traces a swath of lost city fabric from Eastlake to the Chinatown-International District, revealing the buildings, businesses, and everyday places that once stood in the freeway’s path.
By bringing Seattle’s 1950 streetscape back into view, CITY ERASED asks visitors to consider what was sacrificed for a car-centered future and how design can help preserve memory, repair division, and imagine a more connected and equitable city.
Reception for the exhibit will be held Thursday, May 28, 2026, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. RSVP here!
- Open May 7 through June 1, Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Call for proposals: Gould Gallery exhibits in 2026-27 and beyond
The Office of the Dean invites members of the College of Built Environments community to propose exhibitions and related programming for Gould Gallery in academic year 2026–27. We welcome proposals from faculty, staff, and students, as well as ideas for traveling exhibitions and external partnerships that align with CBE’s values and strategic priorities.
Exhibition timing
Exhibitions are typically programmed in four- or five-week installations during autumn, winter, and spring quarters, with the possibility of a two-week extension as the calendar allows. Proposals may be submitted for up to two academic years in advance.
How to submit a proposal
In a message to gouldpav@uw.edu, please describe your proposed exhibition concept, including the themes, intended audience(s), and any faculty, staff, students, community partners, or external collaborators involved. Please note any financial support you have secured or plan to pursue, as well as any technical requirements or specialized display needs. Gallery drawings and elevations are available upon request.
Review process
Proposals submitted by March 6, 2026, will be reviewed by an advisory group of CBE faculty and staff. This group will make recommendations for approval in consultation with the Dean and the Chairs+ academic leadership team. In shaping the exhibition calendar, the advisory group will prioritize proposals that meaningfully reflect CBE’s values and advance the college’s strategic priorities across education, research, and public engagement.
