Earlier this month, the Population Health Initiative awarded its Tier 1 Grants, designed for initial research and exploration or “entry-level” projects. Awards of up to $25,000 per project will be available with a project period of up to eight months, and applications are accepted three times per year in February, April, and October through 2023. Among the nine spring 2023 Tier 1 awarded projects was “Incorporating Youth Perspectives to Improve Disaster Planning: Piloting Drone-Based Photovoice to Explore Cultural Assets” whose investigators included UDP Associate Professor Daniel Abramson and UDP Masters’ student Matias Korfmacher, in collaboration with researchers (Nicole Errett and Resham Patel) from the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences.
The project targets the disproportionate psychosocial health impacts of disasters in both built and natural environments in young individuals and takes a unique perspective in centering youth voices within natural disaster planning. By using a novel photovoice methodology and drones in collaboration with students from the Ocosta Junior-Senior High School STEAM club in Westport WA, the study aims to expand youth engagement and use drone imagery to identify Westport’s key cultural assets.
CBE and UDP are excited to congratulate Abramson and Korfmacher on this award and we look forward to learning more about this research and its implications for the built environment in Westport and beyond.
