Each year, we honor exceptional faculty and staff whose dedication, service, and impact strengthen our community. These awards celebrate individuals who embody our shared commitment to excellence, equity, and collaboration.
Congratulations to our 2025 awardees—and thank you for the many ways you teach, support, and inspire every day.
“As a college, we are strengthened by the people who show up every day with care, creativity, and commitment,” said Interim Dean Ken Yocom. “This year’s honorees represent the best of who we are at CBE—and it’s a privilege to recognize their leadership, impact, and deep investment in our students, programs, and mission. Congratulations to each of them.”
The Lionel “Spike” Pries Award For Teaching Excellence recognizes outstanding teaching by faculty within the College of Built Environments during this academic year as nominated and voted on by CBE students.
Students consistently praised David Salzer for going above and beyond in and out of the classroom—offering one-on-one support, providing make-up lectures, and creating a welcoming environment where every student feels seen and supported. As one student shared, “He doesn’t focus on students just passing the class—he wants everyone to learn something every single day.”
Whether helping students prepare for competitions, making time after hours to offer help, or simply remembering every student’s name, David’s commitment to meaningful, student-centered education exemplifies the values of this award. His passion for teaching and care for his students leave a lasting impression on all who have the opportunity to learn from him.
The Outstanding Faculty Award recognizes a full-time faculty member who has made the most notable contributions in their field or to the community in research and/or service, to their department or college, or to students through teaching and/or service during the past academic year.
Professor Hyun Woo “Chris” Lee has made a remarkable impact over the past year, both in and out of the classroom. His leadership in the construction estimating sequence has directly contributed to student success, while his role as Undergraduate Program Coordinator has been pivotal in launching the Construction Management Department Honors Program and managing the application process for what is anticipated to be the department’s largest graduating class.
Beyond academics, Chris’s research and work in sustainability, safety, and lean construction are considered groundbreaking, earning recognition across the field. His contributions as chair of the undergraduate committee have helped shape a more effective and supportive learning environment, strengthening the department’s teaching and advising practices.
This award recognizes the vital role of part-time faculty and honors those who make lasting contributions through teaching.
For over a decade, Jake LaBarre has led the Neighborhood Design/Build Studio with vision, heart, and hands-on mentorship. Under his guidance, students design and construct projects that serve real communities—an experience that is as transformational as it is educational. Jake’s thoughtful teaching style, professional expertise, and deep belief in the power of design have made him a beloved mentor and an indispensable part of the CBE learning experience.
For over 15 years, Jake has co-led the Neighborhood Design/Build Studio—an award-winning course where architecture and construction management students collaborate to design and build community projects for Seattle-area nonprofits within a single academic quarter. From El Centro de la Raza to the Beacon Food Forest and the UW Farm, these projects have provided critical infrastructure for local organizations while offering students immersive, hands-on learning experiences.
Jake’s nominators described him as a natural teacher and a dedicated builder who puts in countless extra hours to make each project a success. His mentorship helps students understand the deep connection between design and construction, the power of collaboration, and the potential of architecture to serve communities often left behind. As one nominator shared, “Jake ensures the studio is both fun and valuable. Many students go on to careers in design/build and fabrication because of what they learn from him.”
The Distinguished Staff Award celebrates a staff member whose leadership, service, and collegiality have made a significant impact.
Throughout her time at the college, Neile Graham has played a central role in fostering a positive, collaborative environment that supports students, faculty, and staff alike. Her colleagues and students describe her as a steady, trusted presence—especially within the PhD program—where she has provided essential guidance during times of transition and uncertainty.
Nominators highlighted her deep institutional knowledge, proactive problem-solving, and thoughtful communication. As one wrote, “She often serves as the bridge between departments and individuals, ensuring that academic processes move forward smoothly and that no detail is overlooked.” Others praised her ability to make students feel “seen, supported, and valued,” and her commitment to improving operations while building community.
