Hello and welcome to a new academic year with the College of Built Environments (CBE) at the University of Washington. Each fall brings a sense of optimism and excitement, and this past Wednesday when classes began, the energy in Gould and Architecture Halls was palpable.
I am deeply honored to serve as the Dean of this extraordinary college. My time as interim dean last year gave me a fuller appreciation of the responsibilities of this role, and more importantly, of the incredible people who make up this community. It is with humility and immense gratitude for the dedication of our staff and faculty that I step into this year, knowing that together we are creating transformative opportunities for our students and advancing the mission of preparing the next generation of built environment leaders in the region and beyond.
This year, as in all years, we enter with both promise and complexity. We know there will be challenges to navigate, but I believe firmly in the creativity, dedication, and resilience of our community. Just as we celebrate new programs, innovative research, and inspired teaching, we also take seriously the responsibility to adapt and respond to the pressures facing higher education and the built environments we shape.
Across CBE, our community is rising to the urgent challenges of our time. Through research, design, and teaching we are equipping future leaders to imagine and realize a more just and sustainable world. Our new Environmental Design and Sustainability degree empowers students to shape resilient communities that support both people and nature, while Healing Through Design investigates the ways in which design can foster connection, care, and transformation. These efforts remind us that the work we do matters not only for our students but for the world we serve.
I am especially excited that we begin the year with the exhibit Acts of Conscience: A Collaborative Construct, in Gould Gallery created by artist Buster Simpson in collaboration with Associate Teaching Professor Jim Nicholls. Their work exemplifies the powerful intersection of art, design, and activism sparking dialogue and inspiring action – an embodiment of the very mission of our College.
As we look ahead, I am both encouraged and energized by the opportunities before us. With gratitude for all you bring to this work, I am eager to move forward together into a year of growth, challenge, and impact.
