The College of Built Environments announces the appointment of Catherine De Almeida as Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington, effective June 16, 2026.
A member of the Department of Landscape Architecture faculty since 2019, De Almeida is an accomplished scholar and designer whose work examines the intersections of landscape, material systems, equity, and environmental resilience. Her research and creative work have received national distinction, including the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture’s Faculty Award of Excellence in Research and/or Creative Work and a 2026-27 Landscape Architecture Foundation Fellowship for Innovation and Leadership.
“I am honored to step into this role and serve a department with such a strong legacy of design leadership, environmental stewardship, and civic engagement,” said De Almeida. “The Department of Landscape Architecture has long prepared students to be critical thinkers and creative designers who courageously imagine new futures that address the urgent challenges shaping our built and natural environments. I look forward to working alongside our strong community of faculty, staff, students, and alumni to continue building on that momentum and co-creating these futures together.”
Ken Yocom, John and Rosalind Jacobi Family Endowed Dean of the College of Built Environments, praised De Almeida’s appointment and the leadership she will bring to the department.

She brings a thoughtful and forward-looking vision, grounded in design inquiry, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a deep commitment to student success,” said Yocom. “She understands both the opportunities and responsibilities facing landscape architecture today and is well prepared to lead and grow the department.”
Looking ahead
As Chair, De Almeida will provide academic and administrative leadership for the Department of Landscape Architecture, guiding its teaching, research, community engagement, and strategic priorities while continuing to strengthen the department’s national reputation for innovation and impact.
